MAMIRNIKUWI

NOMINATIONED FOR THE SUSTAINABLE FUTURES AWARD, SYNDEY FILM FESTIVAL, 2023

Broadcast on the ABC and available on iView.

Yanyuwa/Garrwa woman, Antonia Burke, used to be a money hungry mining company professional. After hitting emotional rock bottom, she had a revelation that things needed to dramatically change and left the industry. Racked by past traumas, Antonia entered a period of healing and emerged completely transformed and wanting to help other Indigenous women to do the same. Now, for the first time, Antonia travels home to the Tiwi Islands to put her skills to work, helping set up the Tiwi's first female ranger group, Mamirnikuwi.

It's a ranger group with a difference, where the women believe that healing country is just as important as healing self. But just as things are falling into place, Antonia's biggest challenge strikes: her old life circles back around as mining company Santos declares they are building a huge gas plant off the Tiwi coastline, threatening Tiwi life, culture and their pristine sea country.  Suddenly, finding themselves overnight activists, Antonia and the Mamirnikuwi rangers must pull everything together to fight this mining giant and protect their island home.
